Schlumberger, production operations - a transformation

Simplifying hugely complex production data into a cohesive user experience, across different phases of an oilfield’s lifecycle. My involvement was Experience Director across the products covering the field’s production phases: Well Ops and Network Ops.

We required an extremely complex and research heavy, user-centred methodology as our users were specialised oilfield engineers. We went through extensive Discovery phases, traveling to Houston and Ecuador to gather: user, business and technical requirements.

Then we developed our own technique of Concept Elaboration, based on Google Sprints. A rapid prototyping and testing phase, consisting of UX sprints of between 1 and 3 weeks, depending on the complexity of the particular product.

Each sprint consisted of:

  • Phase 1: Research – gathering or refining user requirements, prioritising and agreeing testing scope with stakeholders.

  • Phase 2: Create stimulus - developing quick prototype (whatever fidelity required) for testing and writing user test script.

  • Phase 3: Test - user testing and writing up.

This process we iterate at least 3 times. Resulting in an end-to-end prototype fulfilling 3 key user journeys. This went into a major user testing phase, and then into final interaction design and build.

A cloud-based web application, tracking work from diagnosis to outcome across wells and flowlines. Providing visualisation, insights and recommendations, so engineers can concentrate on strategic tasks and achieve their production goals in a collaborative way.
